Cancer.
Everyone's heard of it. The word's thrown around so much nowadays that it's hard to go a week without hearing about it at least once. One of the saddest things about it in our culture is that the meaning's become virtually obsolete, so much to the point that there's no emotional response evoked when the word's spoken.
But of course that all changes once it becomes personal. The moment you can connect it to someone you love, the whole situation changes and turns upside down. Those facts and numbers aren't just figures in a textbook or pamphlet, it becomes real, it's right there staring you in the face.
I found myself wondering last night how we could become so numb to something so serious and potentially so debastating. I guess it makes it easier for us to go through everyday life without having to burden ourselves with 'other people's problems.' That's sad. The whole thing is sad.
And now I'm sad
